Hello Readers, welcome back to my blog.
I usually don’t take part in the reading community marathons but I decided to try the dothethingathon on book twitter which starts from 24th May to 30th May, it is a week of reading as many books as you can which meant I could finish this book faster than I would usually. My daughter now goes to nursery for a few hours some days of the week and I had nothing to do while I wait for the birth of my second so there was time.
This is the 12th book of the Psy-changeling series and it focuses on a Psy relationship that has been brewing since we first read about Kaleb. I have been looking forward to this story as much as I looked forward to Hawke’s story in Kiss of Snow.
Trigger warning: child abuse
A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained blood red.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid
The day of reckoning is here.
Kaleb has found his quarry and returned with her to his secure house in Moscow. He has been searching for her since she was taken captive at age 16. Her name is Sahara and she is related to Faith Nightstar of the F clan. The first 100 pages is about her getting acquainted with her new environment and trying to navigate the labyrinth that her mind has been locked in for seven years.
There are so many things revealed in this book about Kaleb and Sahara that is just truly heartbreaking. The way they cling to each other for their sanity and how loyalty is valued so highly speaks of something that they lost in their childhood. It made it really hard for me to read of their destroyed childhood especially when I am about to bring my second child into the world. I was heartbroken for the 2 little lost souls but there is light at the end of the tunnel for them.
The F clan are truly the most remarkable group on the Psy race because despite their silence they protect their own fiercely, whether the individual is silent or not does not matter to them. Their children will not be allowed to suffer despite the mandates of the Psy silence protocol.
Terrible things continue to happen to the Psy race and it seems their total destruction is imminent which is devastating for the millions of lives that will be lost. Kaleb is the only salvation but he has no conscience and will only save his race if Sahara is safe and sound. Sahara is his moral compass and she takes her role seriously because she will not let Kaleb fall further into the darkness that is consuming him from within.
This is one of the most intense stories in the series with very little play or humour involved as is customary in the other stories. It is certainly not for the faint hearted as there is a lot of darkness surrounding the characters. I enjoyed the intensity of the story more than I thought I would and I loved that there was such a bond possible for the Psy because they were very lost and have a long way to go for their race to become healthy.
