SUMMARY

In Disney’s live-action film “Beauty and the Beast,” Belle, a bright, beautiful, and independent young woman, is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince inside. Soft, warm, bright colors show Belle’s optimistic view of the world in this full-color manga-style graphic novel, which explores Belle’s innermost thoughts as she learns that true beauty comes from within.

Review

We are all familiar with the tale of Beauty and the Beast. Now Disney gives us the tale in manga form from the Belle’s perspective with beautiful colours. A girl who lives with her father and loves books has always felt out of step with the rest of the village and yearns for something new. Her father doesn’t return from his trip so she traces his steps to a seemingly abandoned castle. She finds out that the rose she asked her father for has caused problems so she decides to take his place in atoning for the mistake. She discovers a lot of strange things in the castle, one of which is that the Beast has a different side to him when he is not angry. She teaches the Beast a new way to express himself and they fall in love.

Despite how Belle felt at the beginning of the story, the colours used were bright because she has a positive outlook and wasn’t depressed and this was expressed in colours. I loved the colours and so did my 8 month old when I read it to her; she loved the colours so much. I gave this 5 out of 5 stars because the drawing was well represented for the manga style and the change in colour scheme to represent emotions was fantastic. There is a second manga that goes with this which is from Beast’s POV; check out my review for that on my blog.
