Hello Readers, welcome back to my blog.
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?
Alessandra is a very forward girl in a backward time. She will not sit around and wait for her faith to be decided for her by her father, especially when she knows he doesn’t have her best interest in mind because he has ignored her most of her life and prefers her sister. She lost her mother at a young age and has been looking herself since. She is bold and ambitious. She will not suffer an injustice lightly, so much so that she will kill to get what she wants and Alessandra wants to be queen. A queen without a king over her. She has a plan in place to get herself a throne and now that her elder sister is engaged, she can pursue her plan.
Alessandra succeeds in getting the attention of the shadow king, which is the first step to getting her the throne. The shadow king is not what she expects and she finds herself liking him despite the success of her plan resulting in his death. Alessandra has entered the palace to change things and she will not follow convention because it will not get her what she wants. Will she be able to ignore her feelings and carry out her plan? What hindrance could she face on the road to obtaining her throne?
I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. As I’ve always said, the performance of an audio book boosts my enjoyment of it when I am not physically reading it myself. I loved the writing style. The main protagonist was a very confident girl, who didn’t wait around in a time when women were brought up to wait for their male relatives. She was forward thinking and morally grey. I loved the relationship between the shadow king and Alessandra. Although it says on goodread that there is a second part, I hope this is a standalone because it has ended quite well for me. I don’t think there is any more for the story to explore aside from the death of the King’s parents.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
