I have been hearing great things about Sarah J. Maas’s writing so I decided to read one of her books, I picked a court of thorns and roses because the fifth book in the series came out January 2021. I like reading series that are still ongoing.

SUMMARY

FEYRE IS A HUNTRESS

FEYRE MUST FIND A WAY TO BREAK A SPELL, OR LOSE HER HEART FOREVER.

Feyre’s life is described in gruelling detail and I was really mad at the seeming selfishness of her family. Feyre has to hunt for her family while her two elder sisters did nothing and spent the little money Feyre makes to feed their family. One sister is in lala land the other is so consumed with hate that she does nothing but make snide comments with a permanent snare on her face. On one of Feyre’s hunts she kills a wolf and sold its pelt, turns out the wolf was a faerie and the penalty for killing one of the faeries in an unprovoked attack is to exchange your life for the life taken according the treaty signed by humans and faes five hundred years ago. One of the High Lords of the faes in Prythian comes to take atonement but decided to spare Feyre’s life, which she is confused by.

As Feyre going to live in the court of the High Lord of Spring, she encounters a lot of mysterious and deadly creatures in the forest of Prythian while trying to discover why everything is not as it seems in the land of faeries. She is saved by Tamlin and they fall in love Feyre finally find a home where she is cared for and she can do things that are of interest to her rather than fighting constantly for the survival of her family. The court of spring becomes too dangerous for a human and Tamlin sends Feyre back to her family to protect her from an evil he cannot fight against. When Feyre returns to her see her family thriving without her, she decides to go back and fight alongside Tamlin to save his court but what she finds on her return is more than she expected.

The horror and pain Feyre has to go through to prove her love for Tamlin is so gruesome but I found myself unable to put the book down during her trial. It was so descriptive and the scenes were heart-rending. I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series and see what the other courts of Prythian are like, I am especially curious about Rhysand the High Lord of the Night court.
