In Disney’s live-action film “Beauty and the Beast,” Belle, a bright, beautiful, and independent young woman, is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince inside. Dark, cool, muted colors show the Beast’s pessimistic view of the world in this full-color manga-style graphic novel, which explores the Beast’s struggle as he tries to move on from his past and learn what it is to love.

We are all familiar with the tale of Beauty and the Beast. Now Disney gives us the tale in manga form from the Beast’s perspective with beautiful colours. The prince was shallow and only cared about beautiful things until he was cursed to be a Beast. He is to find true love to break the curse before the last petal of the rose falls. Belle’s father tries to steal a rose from the Beast’s garden and gets imprisoned; Belle offers to take her father’s place and during the course of her imprisonment she teaches the Beast a new way to express himself and they fall in love.

The colours at the beginning of Beast’s tale were black and dark blue to represent his dreary view of the world and his dissatisfaction. They become a lighter blue as he discovers his emotions with Belle and by the end of the tale the colours are very bright to signify his enlightment and the break of his curse. I loved the colours and so did my 8 month old when I read it to her; she couldn’t get enough of the colours. I gave this 5 out of 5 stars because the drawing was well represented for the manga style and the change in colour scheme as the story progresses was fantastic. There is a second manga that goes with this which is from Belle’s POV; I can’t wait to read it.
